Brewers (44-61) 5 Cubs (48-56) 0

Win: Brandon Kintzler (3-0) Loss: Pedro Strop (1-1)

Home Runs: None

Three Stars-Brewers

Third Star- Rickie Weeks- The 2B hit a 9th inning two run double to make it 5-0. It was his only hit of the day.

Second Star- Jeff Bianchi- Bianchi also finished with only one hit, but it was  a big one, a two run double that gave the Brewers a three run lead at the time.

First Star- Kyle Lohse- The Brewers starter was excellent, tossing six shutout innings despite some early struggles. He got a no decision, but lowered his ERA to 3.22.

Game Notes:

The Brewers bullpen was outstanding, throwing three innings and allowing just one hit.

Milwaukee broke a scoreless tie by scoring five runs in the top of the ninth inning.

Caleb Gindl was the only Brewer with multiple hits, singling twice.

Three Stars-Cubs

Third Star- Anthony Rizzo: With so few candidates, Rizzo wouldn’t normally be on this with the game he had tonight, but the Cubs offense was non-existent so he earns a spot. He went 2-3, but one of his hits could have been called an error.

Second Star-Junior Lake: The rookie phenom broke his 0-fer with two singles and neither of them should have been called errors.

First Star- Jeff Samardzija: The shark was excellent in possibly his final start in a Cub uniform. He threw seven shutout innings, struck out seven and took a no hitter into the fifth.

Game Notes:

Pedro Strop was charged with five runs over just .1 inning. Those were the first runs he has allowed as a Cub.

For the first time since August of 1971, Cubs starters have thrown at least seven innings while not allowing an earned run in three straight games.

The Cubs left nine men on base.

Additional Notes:

These two teams will play in a double header tomorrow. Game 1 is at 1:20 as Yovani Gallardo opposes Carlos Villanueva. Tyler Thornburg will face Jake Arrieta in game 2 at 7:20. It will be Arrieta’s first start as a Cub.

With the trade deadline just two days away, Cubs players have been mentioned plenty in trade talks. Nate Schierholtz and Kevin Gregg are seen as the most likely to be dealt.
