After a overtime victory against the Phoenix Coyotes on Thursday night, the Chicago Blackhawks and their fans have another reason to celebrate, Kris Versteeg will be once again wearing the indian head sweater.
The Blackhawks made the deal official Tuesday night with the Florida Panthers as they will receive Versteeg and Phillippe Lefebrve in return for forward Jimmy Hayes and defenseman Dylan Olsen. The Panthers will be responsible for paying half of Versteeg’s $4.4 million salary.
On a bad Florida team, Versteeg has gotten off to a bit of a slow start with just two goals and five assists in 18 games. The move will be a good one for the 27 year-old winger as he returns to a much stronger team. Versteeg made his NHL debut for the Hawks back in the ’07-’08 season and was then a key contributor for the following two seasons and helped the Hawks win the Stanley Cup in 2010. Due to salary cap restrictions, the Hawks had to move Versteeg after the championships season. Versteeg spent time with the Flyers and Maple Leafs before two spending the last two years with the Panthers.
Although the Hawks lose two young solid young players, Versteeg is a proven veteran that will fit right back in with the Blackhawks. A great move for Stan Bowman and the Chicago Blackhawks.
