Camping with the Bears Day-12

The final morning of Bears camp started with the crowd waiting in a cold, rain swept line to get a final glimpse of this very talented Bears team in Bourbonnais. The sun made as brief an appearance as the pads, as they quickly came off after some run blocking work during 11 on 11 drills.

Practice was back on the normal fields as the Olivet Tigers began training camp of their own across the street on Ward Field. The competition at punter once again continued with each punter showing excellent distance and direction. Tress Way leads the competition every so slightly showing just a tad more consistency overall in camp.

The Bears offensive weapons continue to impress and improve with each day in camp. The Bears now look to have two tight end options in Martellus Bennett and Zach Miller. Miller again was targeted multiple times today by Bears QBs and is showing a complete skill set that fits the Bears up tempo offense. Miller caught 2 touchdowns in the Red Zone and Bennett caught one, as the tight end position is now becoming one of strength on the Bears roster. The real question is how many tight ends will the Bears keep on the roster, who will fill those spots, and who will be left on the sidelines at the end of camp.

Starting safety positions are still up for grabs. Ryan Mundy and Danny McCray continued to get the majority of snaps with the first team defense. Adrian Wilson and Brock Vereen are running with the second team but don’t expect that to last with Wilson. Wilson is beginning to show off his pro-bowl form as he defended a well played pass attempt to Martellus Bennett at the goal line. Chris Conte seems to have returned to form from last year as he had several plays where his bad angles had him lagging behind the play on the field.

Third wide receiver is still an open one and it was the Josh show again today. This time it was Josh Bellamy that was found by Bears QBs today. He showed great concentration and route running with Cutler and Clausen hitting him in stride on several occasions. He beat the corner on a fade route in the Red Zone but Palmer left it a bit short and off target. We’ll get to see more of the Josh and Josh competition this Thursday at Soldier Field

This year’s time in Bourbonnais has come and gone and which each season brings big expectations. This year promises to see big improvements on offense and even bigger improvements on defense. Bourbonnais will miss this team as they break camp this year a stronger, more cohesive unit. Superbowl or Bust!
