Camping with the Bears Day-2

Second day of camping with the Bears, was quite similar to the first day with only a few notable exceptions. The threat of rain didn’t deter the crowd, as the first Saturday practice kicked off, and there was standing room only, with little room left for even that.

Cutler again looked sharp and in control except for his first pass during 11 on 11 drills. Kelvin Hayden picked off a short pass on the first play sending the first team offense to the bench, while Clausen got some reps with the second team. Hayden was the defensive star on day two as he recorded an interception and a fumble recovery, filling in for Tim Jennings, who was kept out of todays practice. Brandon Marshall to the delight of the crowd, came off the sidelines to stop Hayden as he was streaking towards the end zone after the fumble recovery.

Trevor Scott and Jared Allen both looked great coming off the edge disrupting plays, and on at least two occasions forcing Bears QBs to ground the ball ending the play. The defense was active all day contesting most of the throws. Khaseem Greene jumped a slant route taking an errant Jordan Palmer toss to the house.

The day did not belong completely to the defense with Kyle Fuller coming back to earth after yesterday’s performance. Alshon Jeffrey showed both rookies Kyle Fuller and Brock Vereen why he was selected to last years Pro Bowl. Twice Jeffrey beat Fuller down the right sideline for big gains if not touchdowns. On both throws Vereen was late with help and Cutler found the opening along the right sideline delivering a pair of nice long balls with precision.

Deep seam routes and slants seemed to be on display today with Marsall and Bennett both delivering longs gains against the first team defense. The only other obvious mistake Cutler made today besides the interception to Hayden, was a near pick by second year linebacker Jon Bostic. Bostic defending Bennett in the back of the end zone nearly came up with the turnover to force a field goal attempt by the offense.

Trestman runs practice with endless energy and swill watch like precision. Players are constantly moving and there is plenty of action for the fans to watch. Unlike former Bear’s head coaches, Trestman is a hands on coach and it is not uncommon to see him trailing a play or player on an individual drill.

Tomorrow the pads come on and we will start separating the pretenders from the contenders. It will be interesting to see how the Shea McClellan Project performs in pads. The safety and running back position battles will be fun to watch as well as there is a lot of potential talent at those positions battling for a roster spot. Bring your marshmallows and wienies if you plan on coming tomorrow as camp is about to sizzle.
