Camping with the Bears Day-6

Day 6 of Bears training camp has come and gone and there are still lingering questions. Who will get the starting nod at the safety positions? Who will back up Matt Forte? Will Shea McClellan win the staring strong side linebacker? Does the Chicago hotdog cart lady ever change the water in that thing?

The big hit today again was the competition between the punters Tress Way and Patrick O’Donnell. O”Donnell received the biggest cheers as he boomed a punt from the back of the end zone which landed on the 32 yard line. Final ruling from the Russian judges nullified the record because it was wind aided but still showing a very nice leg indeed. Each punter nailed a couple of nice punts but this race is still too close to call. Long snapping is improving daily but still not up to previous standards.

Defensive line play was again the highlight of practice. The Bears front four is generating pressure from all four positions with minimal blitzing. This bodes well for the rest of the defense as line play sets the tempo for the rest of the squad. The defense again was skunked on interceptions but for the most part they were able to hold their own against the Bears receiving corps.

Cutler looked sharp in the two minute and red zone drills. He was easily finding the open receiver delivering the ball with precision. Marshall was his favorite target today and his concentration was much improved from Monday. Trestman must have buttered the balls a little today as it seemed that everyone dropped at least one catchable ball today. Quarterback play in general was again excellent today with Clausen delivering some nice throws. David Fales saw significant time with the third string and seems to be working through his progressions at a much faster pace than early in camp.

Shaun Draughn received a lot of reps with the second team and looked great running and receiving the ball. The backup running back position is still wide open with several backs getting some serious looks. Ka’deem Carey is till absorbing the playbook but is looking good taking some third team reps. Jordan Lynch, a long shot to make the roster, received more reps today and looked good running the ball and in individual blocking drills.

It still was another injury free practice and the Kyle Long watch was running at full bore today. Anthony Adams was his usual entertaining self today on the sideline. Anticipation and confidence is running at all times highs for the fans as they are ready for the season to start. Tomorrow will be sideline coverage so if you have any burning questions for any player or coach, e-mail them to ddayu2@me.com. Happy camping.
