Carlos Marmol to the Los Angeles Dodgers

The Chicago Cubs have traded relief pitcher Carlos Marmol and 209,000 in International money to the Los Angeles Dodgers for RHP Matt Guerrier. The Dodgers will pay 245,000 of the remaining 4.9 million left on Marmol’s contract.┬áMarmol was designated for assignment on June 25th. The Cubs have been trying to trade Marmol for almost 2 years now and it took the Cubs to DFA him to open the market. Their were at least 3 teams interested in Marmol, the Dodgers of course, the Boston Red Sox and one other team. Marmol would have cleared waivers and been a free agent to sign with any team, but with a market for Marmol the Dodgers decided to pull of a trade which wouldn’t kill them.

Guerrier is 34-years old and in the final year of his contract. He was designated for assignment by the Dodgers recently. He will head to the Cubs.

Marmol is 30-years old and was 2-4 this season with a 5.87era. Plus, he walked 21 and struck out 32 in 27.2 innings. Marmol struggled all season long and a change was needed. Marmol was the closer, not the closer, the closer again for the past 2 seasons. It’s been a roller coaster ride for him the past 2 seasons.

The Cubs finally decided to DFA him after he blew another save vs. the New York Mets on June 16th.

Marmol has became a distraction for the club and the Cubs didn’t want that anymore. It became to be mental with him and why he continued to struggle.

A change of scenery was needed and the best for Marmol. Now Marmol is officially not a Cub. I still wish Marmol the best of luck.

Shawn Camp may be the next Cubs to be DFA. He almost blew another lead yesterday giving up 3 runs, but the Cubs held on to a 7-6 lead. This is speculation, but everyone is thinking that and the move could be coming.
