Checkers Down IceHogs in Home Opener

It defiantly wasn’t the start the IceHogs were looking for to kickoff their six game home stand. After jumping out to a 1-0 lead, the IceHogs couldn’t get on track and fell to the Charlotte Checkers 2-1.

It was a chippy first period that included nine total penalties, but the IceHogs got on the board first.

The IceHogs took the lead when Marcus Kruger found the back of the net with 5:40 left in the first period. Nick Leddy and Ryan Stanton connected for the assists. Rockford had another scoring chance a few minutes later, but the refs waved it off.

The second period saw some more chippy play as at time both teams struggled to get anything going on. Finally Charlotte got things going, as they grabbed the equalizer.

Charlotte capitalized on a Nick Leddy penalty, and scored on the power play. The Drayson Bowman goal for Charlotte snapped a 21 straight penalty kill streak for the IceHogs.

Bowman wasn’t done on the scoring end of the game. He gave the Checkers the lead as he netted a pass from Zac Dalpe to give the Checkers the 2-1 lead at the 16:42 mark.. It was Bowman’s third goal on the season.

Bowman finished as the number one star of the game.

Rockford never got back on track as Charlotte put the game away with their tough defense, as they earned another two points on the season with the 2-1 final. The Hogs looked outmatched from the second period on, struggling to score or put anything together.

The Checkers fought off a late IceHog surge that included a power play and moved to 3-0-0-1 on the season. The Hogs fell to 0-3-0-1.

The good news for the Hogs? They will be back in action Sunday with another home game against the Checkers at the BMO Harris Bank Center in Rockford. Game time is 5:05 P.M. CST, and plenty of tickets are still left.
