The Chicago Bears have big plans for first-round rookie tight end Colston Loveland.
After all, few teams run 12-personnel more often than new Bears head coach Ben Johnson did with the Detroit Lions, and Chicago clearly believes Loveland offers more upside as a pass-catcher than former Penn State standout Tyler Warren, who was chosen four picks after Loveland by the Indianapolis Colts.
In Chicago, Loveland’s route-running and reliable hands could quickly make him a favorite target of former No. 1 overall pick, quarterback Caleb Williams, in a suddenly loaded collection of pass catchers.
According to at least one former NFL executive, though, Loveland couldn’t have landed in a better situation or scheme fit than going off the board at No. 10 overall in April’s NFL Draft.

Former New York Giants VP of Player Evaluation, Marc Ross, put together a list of incoming rookies who landed in the perfect situation, including adding Loveland to Williams’ supporting cast, a year removed from putting Williams atop the same list.
“The Bears have reshaped their offense to fit Ben Johnson’s vision this offseason,” Ross writes, listing Loveland seventh. “Improving the offensive line and adding playmakers at the skill positions. Enter Loveland, a 6-foot-6, 248-pound weapon in the middle of the field for Caleb Williams. Like we saw with Sam LaPorta in Detroit over the past two seasons, there might be times where it’s more about quality than quantity for Loveland in Johnson’s offense, but we should expect to see plenty of the sure-handed pass catcher in the red zone.”
If Loveland can live up to the LaPorta comparisons, he could figure to make a transformative impact on the Bears’ offense. After all, the former University of Michigan standout only dropped two passes last season in Ann Arbor while averaging 5.2 yards after the catch per reception.
In an offense that already includes DJ Moore and Rome Odunze and that added Luther Burden III in the second round, Loveland has the potential to become a favorite target of Williams both in the red zone but also to move the chains in big spots.
