The Big Problem Is Still the Lack of a Number One Receiver

When the Bears got Jay Cutler in the 2009 off-season, Bears fans everywhere were excited.

They were getting a young gunslinger who could possibly turn this offense into a top one in the NFC.

That didn’t pan out to well for the Bears.

In fact, Cutler didn’t play up to potential, bringing out the criticism almost every week.

Many things could have attributed to Cutler’s ineptitude, including coaching and skill on the offensive side of the ball.

In Denver, Cutler was a solid quarterback.

Although, he never reached the post-season, he was a strong foundation for a young Bronco’s team.

A team that also had a star wide receiver in Brandon Marshall.

Something that the Bears lack; a lack that’s killing the Bears.

I’m willing to bet my bottom dollar that if Jay Cutler had a true number one receiver, the Bears would have been a better team.

I’m talking about a player the Bears could go to in the clutch; a player who will make that big play for you; a player who will take the slack off of other receivers and make them better.

But in reality, the Bears don’t have that player.

Making it not any easier for Cutler to turn it around this season.

Sure you could say the Bears have some receivers that could potentially do some things for Cutler.

We seen the emergence of Devin Aromashadou at the end of last season.

This season, he needs to prove he belongs in the NFL and connect with Cutler right away.

The thing about Cutler is that he can make these receivers better.

In order to do that, they need to play their roles.

Devin Hester is not a number one receiver, nor will he ever be.

So the Bears need to stop treating him like one.

Hester is best suited for the slot—a big speed threat that can burn a safety down the field.

The problem again leads to not having a number one receiver to attract the defense.

With a Mike Martz offense we are going to be seeing a lot of quick short passes

rather than deep bombs.

This might help Cutler’s ability to make the key plays rather than have the pressure to hit the home run.

With the receivers the Bears have at the moment, the offense won’t shine.

It can be good but not good enough to scare opposing teams…just yet.
