It seems like the Chicago Bears are really targeting the Detroit Lions coaching staff with interviewing another one of their coaches.
The Chicago Bears top priority this offseason will be to fill their head coaching vacancy after firing former head coach Matt Eberflus on November 29th. Already interviewing candidates like Detroit Lions Offensive Coordinator Ben Johnson and former Tennessee Titans Head Coach Mike Vrable, the Chicago Bears just wrapped up another interview with Detroit Lions Defensive Coordinator Aaron Glenn per 670 The Score.

The former NFL cornerback and three-time Pro-Bowler Aaron Glenn just wrapped up interviewing for the Bears head coaching position which they conducted over zoom. Overall Glenns defense for the Lions is about average in the league with the Lions strength on the defensive side of the ball is stopping the run, with the Lions ranking fifth in rushing defense with only allowing 98.4 yard per game. For the rest of the statistics the Lions didn’t fare that much better when it came to total defense being the 20th ranked team allowing 342.4 yards, 30th in passing with 244 yards, and 7th in scoring offense with allowing 20.1 points per game.
The Chicago Bears for their part were one of the worst rated defenses in the league last year as well as having a terrible offense to boot. Bringing in Glenn given his experience could work, but with Glenn not able to make the Lions defense anything special and just having them be average shouldn’t be the route the Bears pursue.
Ryan Poles is the “point man”
According to President/CEO Kevin Warren general manager Ryan Poles is going to be the “point man” in the search for the Bears next head coach. The Bears began their search for a new head coach as soon as Matt Eberflus was fired and have made sure to cross all their T’s and dot all their I’s during their search. Poles gave some insight on what type of coach they will be looking for in their wide-ranging search:
“We’re looking for clear vision, a developmental mindset, really good game management and obviously a plan to develop a quarterback is going to be a key part of that as well,” Poles said.
To this point Aaron Glenn joins a list of names in the “wide casting net” the Chicago Bears are casting such as former Seattle Seahawks Head Coach Pete Carrol, former Tennessee Titians Head Coach Mike Vrable, and New York Giants Offensive Coordinator Mike Kafka to name a few.
What do the Bears need?
The Chicago Bears need an offensive minded and Quarterback centered head coach that can unlock Caleb Williams untapped potential. The Bears also need someone with the ability to come up with schemes in order to utilize the Bears offensive weapons Keenan Allen and D.J. Moore. Glenn’s fellow coordinator Ben Johnson would be a perfect fit to accomplish all of that and has also wrapped up interviewing with the Bears. Ben Johnson is the leading reason as to why the Detroit Lions were the best offenses in the NFL and is one of the main reasons they secured the No. 1 seed.
There is a catch however, NFL insider Peter Schrager reported that Ben Johnson could potentially be scooped up by the Las Vegas Raiders to be their head coach with Schrager reporting:
Ben Johnson / Raiders actually picking up way more steam in league circles over last 48 hours.
Hopefully given the dysfunction of the Raiders and them not having a franchise quarterback yet, with them having to take one in this year’s draft, deters Ben Johnson from going there and brings him over to the Chicago Bears as their head coach. Neither Johnson nor Glenn can do anything further until the NFL season is officially over. Hopefully by the end of it all the Chicago Bears will be announcing that Ben Johnson will be the next Chicago Bears Head Coach.
