Is this the year the Bears have a great offensive line?
The Chicago Bears have been disappointed with their offensive line for the better part of four decades. The last few seasons the unit has been a mess with injuries forcing many linemen to play out of position.
The interior of the line was a mess last season. Opposing defenses were able to put pressure up the middle and blow up a lot of plays. The interior has been a problem for a while. The Poles completely overhauled the interior. The Bears have not had a guard named to the first team All-Pro since Stan Jones did it way back in 1959.
Now it appears that the Chicago Bears have a very good offensive line and a very solid interior line. Poles acquired Joe Thuney, Drew Dalman, and Jonah Jackson. Thuney is a three-time Pro Bowler, two-time All-Pro, and four-time Super Bowl champion. He will likely be the leader of the unit.
Braxton Jones hopefully returns healthy again to provide solid protection at left tackle, as does Darnell Wright at right tackle. This starting unit has a chance to be one of the better units in the league now.
Poles also drafted Ozzy Trapilo to provide some competition for Jones. Additionally, Kiran Amegadjie plays in his second season. He had a lot of misfortune last season. He was recovering from an injury then was suddenly thrust as a starter despite having no training camp. He struggled some as a result. Now he is healthy and can have the advantage of a full training camp.
If this unit does the job as expected the offense will flourish. They will open holes for the running game to succeed. Also, they will be able to protect the quarterback and allow the receivers to go downfield and make some plays. We can only hope that is the case.
