Chicago Bulls finally make up their minds to rebuild

You may not agree with how the Chicago Bulls dealt Jimmy Butler and the package they received back, but the organization finally showed some direction.

The Bulls made the move during the 2017 NBA Draft sending Jimmy Butler and the No. 16 overall pick for No. 7 overall, Zach LaVine and Kris Dunn.

With the draft pick, Chicago took Finnish forward Lauri Markkanen, giving them three “lottery picks” as John Paxson and Gar Forman have said.

But what will these “three lottery picks” amount to?

Well, Chicago will be bad next year, that’s almost certain. This also gives the Bulls a chance to build around these young players as their core. With the way the NBA is going these days, you have to build a super team to compete.

Chicago had no interest in doing so and decided to “blow it all up” and restart.

After drafting Denzel Valentine in 2016 and Bobby Portis in 2015, the Bulls can start to form their young core.

When the team hits the court next season, don’t expect much. This is likely a 35-win team AT BEST and can very easily be below the 30-win mark. There will be lots of times where you will be checking a sports scores app such as one like CBS Sports to see how the Bulls are doing, and you wont be shocked to see they will likely be trailing.

As Chicago tries to build through the draft, they could also add a few key free agent signees in the future.

A good plan would to wait out the 2017 free agent class and hope that other teams decide to overspend on these players. The Bulls will have a lot of cap space, especially if they can move Dwyane Wade, Rajon Rondo and Robin Lopez.

Those moves would clear up a lot of cap space for the franchise, allowing them to pursue top free agents in 2018 and 2019.

They have a plan, but will it work?
