The Chicago Cubs finally made a move to help improve their bullpen, and now it did not involve Andrew Miller or Aroldis Champman.
During Wednesday’s win over the New York Mets, ESPN reporter Tim Kurkijan reported that the Cubs and Seattle Mariners agreed to a deal. It was just an hour or so later that the names involved were revealed.
The Cubs acquired left-handed reliever Mike Montgomery in exchange for minor leaguer Dan Vogelbach, the teams announced:
The #Cubs today acquired LHP Mike Montgomery and RHP Jordan Pries from the Seattle Mariners for INF Dan Vogelbach and RHP Paul Blackburn.

The teams also exchanged minor league pitchers as the Cubs received pitcher Jordan Pries and sent Paul Blackburn.
Acquiring the lefty Montgomery should help the Cubs in the pen down the stretch run. Montgomery has thrown 50.1 innings pitched in 30 games as a reliever this season posting a 2.15 ERA and giving up only one home run.
He still has five years of club control left.
For a Cubs pen that has struggled, Montgomery should help them turn things around.
