After the Chicago Cubs were Harvy-ed in yesterday’s lost to the New York Mets, the Cubs brought their bats to today’s game. Scott Feldman who started for the Cubs, pitched fantastic and didn’t even have to. The Cubs actually hit with runners in scoring position and was a great sighting. The Cubs beat the Mets 8-2 to even the series at 1-1 a piece of the 3-game set. The Cubs record stands at 18-24.

Winning pitcher: Scott Feldman (4-3)
Losing pitcher: Jeremy Hefner (0-5)
Save: None

The good: The Cubs were 4-9 with runners in scoring position in today’s game. Yes, the Cubs were slightly under 50% for the game, but we usually see a 0 for or a 1 for. When the Cubs players got into scoring position, they didn’t let Mets’ pitching off the hook and punished them. I know it’s only one game, but hopefully we will see a lot more of the offense hitting with runners in scoring position.

The bad: The Cubs can’t win a game in shutout fashion. The Cubs still don’t have a shutout on the season. There have been chances, but the bullpen couldn’t close the case. The Cubs were up 8-0 entering the 9th inning until relief pitcher Hector Rondon gave up a 2-run home run to Rick Ankiel. There have been a few other instances that the Cubs relief pitching lost the shutout.

Note: The Cubs will not go to a 6-man rotation. Matt Garza will return on Tuesday against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Carlos Villanueva, who has had a good start to the season, will go to the bullpen on Tuesday. The Cubs will have to send down a player or DFA a pitcher in the bullpen. Michael Bowden could be the odd man out, per reports. Rondon could be out also and he will be returned to his original team (Rule V pick). The Cubs also have 6 outfielders and one may go, but not likely.

Tomorrow the Cubs and Mets will square off in the rubber match at 1:20 p.m. central on WGN – heard on WGN 720. Travis Wood will take the mound for the Cubs and Dillon Gee for the Mets.
