Chicago Cubs discuss racist incident involving Adam Jones

The Baltimore Orioles and Boston Red Sox began at three-game set at Fenway Park on Monday night, just games after tensions were high between Manny Machado and Dustin Pedoria.

But the Red Sox throwing at Machado wasn’t the topic of discussion following the game. Instead, it was racist remarks directed at Orioles outfielder Adam Jones.

Following the game, Jones told reporters he was verbally abused by a fan who berated him with racial taunts and even had a bag of peanuts thrown at him.

Here’s what Jones said via USA Today:

A disrespectful fan threw a bag of peanuts at me,’’ Jones said, “I was called the N-word a handful of times tonight. Thanks. Pretty awesome.’’

“It’s different,’’ he said. “Very unfortunate. I heard there was 59 or 60 ejections tonight in the ballpark. It is what it is, right. I just go out and play baseball. It’s unfortunate that people need to resort to those type of epithets to degrade another human being. I’m trying to make a living for myself and for my family.

“It’s unfortunate. The best thing about myself is that I continue to move on, and still play the game hard. Let people be who they are. Let them show their true colors.’’

Jones went on to say that it was one of the worst experiences of his 12-year career in baseball.

Before Tuesday’s game between the Chicago Cubs and Philadelphia Phillies, reporters asked Cubs players their thoughts on the situation.

The Cubs just wrapped up a three-game series in Boston over the weekend before returning for a home stand.

The Athletic’s Sahadev Sharma spoke to Jason Heyward, who had an interesting comment:

When asked if he heard any racist comments at Fenway this weekend, Jason Heyward responded by saying, "You hear stuff, you hear stuff."

Megan Mawackie also tweeted this out:

#Cubs Jason Heyward (regarding Adam Jones incident) "I hear things (derogatory comments) all the time. I don't let it bother me."

Left fielder Kyle Schwarber also offered some insight on the situation:

#Cubs Kyle Schwarber on Adam Jones/fans comments/incident: "It leaves a pit in your stomach that we are still at that point."

And Joe Maddon…

With this being such a hot topic, it will be interesting to hear more about what comes out in the next few days and how MLB will try to fix this problem.
