Chicago Cubs still looking to add left-handed hitting

News of the Chicago Cubs signing Japanese star, Seiya Suzuki, broke on Wednesday morning as the team added a big bat to their outfield.

The 5-year deal had fans rather excited, but the Cubs are reportedly still looking to add and they are hoping that it’s in the form of a left-handed bat. The current depth chart has Rafael Ortega, Greg Deichmann, and Jason Heyward listed as the only left-handed batters.

According to Bruce Levine of 670 TheScore, a former Pittsburgh Pirate be a good fit for the North Siders.

Colin Moran is a 29-year old corner infielder that may prove to be an affordable option for the Cubs.

Moran is now a free agent after spending the last four seasons in Pittsburgh. In 99 games with the Pirates last season, Moran posted a .258 batting average with 10 home runs. His power-hitting does not stack up with the likes of Patrick Wisdom and Frank Schwindel. On the other hand, he has maintained consistent batting averages over his career, which could complement the lineup nicely from the left side of the plate.

Some Cubs fans are still hoping for the team to sign first baseman Freddie Freeman, but Moran serves as a much more realistic and obtainable option. There are plenty of big bats still on the market. Although, finding a solid left-handed one has become an even greater challenge. With Anthony Rizzo and Kyle Schwarber now off the market, the Cubs might have to get creative with filling this lineup hole.

Look for the Cubs to add more pieces as we approach Opening Day. The Cubs kick off spring training tomorrow in a split-squad matchup against the Chicago White Sox.
