The Chicago Cubs announced today that pitcher Brooks Raley was claimed off waivers by the Minnesota Twins and pitcher Brett Marshall was claimed off waivers by the Cincinnati Reds.
The Cubs had to clear one roster spot for the recent signing of Jason Hammel (not made official yet) on the 40-man roster. When the Hammell signing becomes official, the Cubs 40-man roster will be at 39 players.
Raley was a starter when he came to the majors, but has transitioned to the role of a relief pitcher. Raley still had an option left and would have been good depth in the bullpen if another left-handed pitcher was to get injured.
The Cubs claimed Marshall off of waivers on December 23rd from the New York Yankees. Marshall was not going to make the bullpen out of spring training and was a toss-up coming over from New York.
The Cubs tried to slide both Raley and Marshall through waivers unclaimed, but did not get by the teams. Both Raley and Marshall would have been good depth in Triple-A.
Other note: Chad Noble, a former 37th round pick by the Cubs in 2010, is the Cubs new bullpen catcher.
