The Chicago Cubs have reportedly signed one of their draft picks and that will be 12th round pick RHP Trevor Clifton. Clifton has 5th round talent, but teams didn’t expect him to sign to go pro and opt to attend the University of Kentucky. However, the Cubs decided to overslot the value of the 12th round pick and overpay for him to join the organization. The terms of the deal were undisclosed, but Clifton was asking for “third round money” and he said that’s what he got. If that’s the case, Clifton has signed a bonus of around 750K.
Clifton is 6-foot-5 and 185 pounds. Clifton said he will report to minicamp in Arizona next week.
“It was a dream come true,” Clifton said about being drafted. “I got the money I wanted, and playing professional is a dream.”
Clifton is 18-years old and is one player to watch in the Cubs system. He opened scouts eyes during his senior year of high school and the Cubs were always one of his suitors. During his senior year of high school, Clifton went 3-2 with a 3.35 era in 39.2 innings. He had a great strikeout to walk ratio as he struck out 79 batters and walked 21.
Now one draftee is signed, looked for many more players to sign to play for the Cubs sooner than later.
