The Chicago Cubs have reportedly signed international free agent third baseman/shortstop Wladimir Galindo. Galindo tweeted a message with him in a Cubs jacket. The Cubs have yet to confirm the signing.

MLB.com had Galindo as the 25th best international free agent. The Cubs and Galindo may have waited to sign the contract because of his age. Now he’s the right age and the contract can now be official.

Galindo on signing the contract and coming to the United States to play ball: “This is a dream for which I’ve worked so hard;   I want to keep working hard so that I can reach the big leagues in the future.  Soon I will make the trip to the United States to train find out where I will be assigned.”

Jonathan of MLB.com on Galindo:

“Keep an eye on Galindo. The infielder has progressed in all areas of his game and has emerged as one of the top prospects from Venezuela since MLB’s National Showcase in Venezuela last November. Listed as a shortstop, Galindo has also shown the ability to play third base and shined at the position at MLB’s International Showcase in January.

Galindo could end up at one of the corner spots in the infield or make the shift to the outfield because of his size (6-foot-3, 210 pounds) and strong arm. But he might be athletic enough to stay at shortstop.

Scouts like his big body and his raw power. Galindo also has the ability to hit for power to all fields and has a knack for putting the barrel of his bat on the ball. He is sometimes fooled by offspeed pitches and could use more game experience.”

Galindo is just one more player to keep an eye on in the minors while he progresses.
