Starting pitcher Josh Johnson told Jim Bowden of ESPN.com, that the Chicago Cubs, San Diego Padres, Kansas City Royals and San Francisco Giants were the teams he came down too. Johnson ultimately signed a 1-year/8 million dollar contract with the San Diego Padres, plus incentives. All the 8 million is guaranteed.
Johnson did not get into specifics of the other teams offers and so we won’t find out how strong of a offer the Cubs made. The main reasons Johnson chose the Padres was because of manager Bud Black and and the opportunity to play on the West Coast. Johnson lives in Las Vegas and San Diego is close to his hometown. Even though the Cubs lost on Johnson, at least they made an effort for his services. If the Cubs were to sign Johnson, it would have been a good signing. It’s not that the Cubs offer was bad, they couldn’t compete against the West Coast.
Johnson has a history of arm injuries and why he only signed a 1-year contract. This way, Johnson can have a great season and sign for more money and years next off-season.
I always wanted the Cubs to acquire Johnson when he was on the Florida (now Miami) Marlins. I have always like Johnson and was just pleased the Cubs made a run after him.
The Cubs haven’t made any noise this off-season yet, but the time is coming. Tom Loxas hears the Cubs are trying to made a move by Thanksgiving!
