The Chicago White Sox are looking to get some value from starting pitcher Jeff Samardzija this offseason. After failing to find a trade partner for the right-hander, the White Sox will receive a draft pick if Samardzija signs elsewhere this offseason.
The club announced on Friday that they have extended a qualifying offer of one-year, $15.8 million to Samardzija. He’s got one week to accept or deny the offer but the thought around baseball is that he will decline it.
The White Sox acquired the 30-year-old from the Oakland Athletics last offseason, but he did perform up to expectations. He went 11-13 with a 4.96 ERA in 32 starts for the South Siders.
When he does hit free agency, the White Sox are not expected to pursue him. The team that signs Samardzija will send the White Sox a compensation draft pick.
