Could the Bulls Be Thinking of Picking Up Lonzo Ball?

Even though the Bulls are in good shape with the spots 2-5, it looks like they are in need of a position 1 point guard. And for that, they may very well be thinking about drafting Lonzo Ball.

Executive VP of basketball operations John Paxson has talked about the situation with Kris Dunn, saying that they have “not given up on” him, but “we have to get better at that position, there’s absolutely no question in my mind.”

Dunn has potential, but the Bulls haven’t gotten what they need from him to this point. So while there is no confirmation yet on them parting ways, that certainly seems like the direction that things are heading, at least going by Paxson’s words.

They do “have to get better” in position 1—and fast—and if that means drafting a new point guard, that is what is going to need to happen. For his part, Dunn may also be better off somewhere else at this point in his career.

So who might the team be looking at? If we’re to go with Joe Cowley’s thoughts as reported over at the Chicago Sun-Times, it seems like Chicago could pick up Lonzo Ball to fill that position. The idea would be for the Bulls to trade their #7 draft pick to the Lakers in exchange for Ball.

Ball’s stats are impressive. On this NBA forum, you’ll find plenty of threads discussing his achievements. Over the past two years, he has achieved 38% from the floor, 31.5% on three-pointers, and 43.7% from the free-throw line.

We also know that Ball is great with defense, and also excels with running in transition.

While Ball might be a good fit for the Bulls, it does seem potentially unlikely that the trade would actually take place, however. The Lakers scored the #4 pick in the draft. This doesn’t give them much incentive to trade for the #7 pick. Plus, Ball has value for the Lakers, particularly if they want Anthony Davis. Removing him at the team from this point simply to give him to the Bulls wouldn’t necessarily make sense—at least if that is their plan.

There are some other possibilities for the Bulls to consider at this point which may be as viable or even more viable than Ball would be. For example, Patrick Beverley has the right stats and the right personality for the job. Another possibility would be Ricky Rubio, or the Bulls might think about getting in Darren Collison. Any of these players might be possible to obtain, and any one of them could feasibly bring the Bulls the advantage they need to get a fresh edge.

With so many options, there really is no way to make a solid prediction at this point given what we know, except that we are pretty confident that the Bulls will get a new point guard. Whoever they ultimately end up choosing is going to have a vital impact on the season ahead, so this is news that fans and bettors are going to want to follow along with closely.
