Heading into the 2012 season, second base is one of the weaker positions for the Cubs and they don’t have very much depth in the organization at the position either. But here’s what you can expect to see this season.

1. Darwin Barney: Barney burst onto the scene in the first half of the season last year and eventually became the main starter at second for the Cubs. The first half of the season was filled with great success for Barney. He maintained an average near .300 for a good chunk of 2011 until he dropped off in the final two months. He finished with a .276 average  and 66 runs. During the off season, Barney hit the weight room to add muscle and increase his bat speed. It appears Barney will be the opening day starter for the Cubs unless a player under him has a terrific spring.

2. Adrian Cardenas: Cardenas, 24, was picked up by the Cubs after spending time in Oakland’s minor league system. Cardenas has been a disappointment so far in his professional career. He was drafted in the first round of the 2006 MLB by the Philadelphia Phillies. Cardenas was rated in the top 100 prospects by Baseball America in 2008 and 2009, but has not panned out well. But the Cubs have decided to take a shot with the youngster. Cardenas spent all of his 2011 season in Triple A where he batted .314.  Hopefully Cardenas can be a pleasant surprise for the Cubs in 2012.

3. Ronald Torreyes: Torreyes, 19, is the Cubs top second base prospect in their system and 12 overall. He was acquired by the Cubs in the trade that sent Sean Marshall to the Cincinnati Reds. Not a very big guy, but hits for a very high average. Last year in the minors, Torreyes hit .356 in in 67 games. Also, Torreyes is a very versatile player. He backup at shortstop and third base. The Cubs hope that by 2014, Torreyes can become the everyday starter. Just another player that plays a big role in the Cubs pursuit of a World Series Title.

Jeff Baker and possibly even Blake Dewitt could also see some back up playing time at second base this season as well.
