Wednesday’s game between the Cubs (22-25) and Dodgers (26-20) was delayed due to a power outage in the neighborhood. The delay didn’t stop the Dodgers from shelling Cubs’ starter Tom Gorzelanny (2-5).

Gorzelanny (who appears to be the odd man out of the rotation to make room for Carlos Zambrano) was tagged for 7 runs (5 earned) on 7 hits in only 5 innings. The Dodgers put up 3 runs in the 1st and 2 in the 2nd to put the Cubs in a 5-0 hole.

Gorzelanny helped himself out by hitting an RBI single in the bottom half of the 2nd inning to get the Cubs on the board. Then in the 3rd, with the bases loaded, Mike Fontenot was hit by a pitch to cut the deficit to 5-2.

Former Cub, Reed Johnson did some damage against his former club in the 6th in the form of an RBI double. L.A. added another run on a throwing error by Ryan Theriot.

The Cubs wouldn’t go down easy. They received pinch hit RBIs from Xavier Nady (homerun) and Jeff Baker (2 run triple). After Baker’s triple the Cubs were down 7-5.

The Dodgers would add an extra insurance run in the 9th off of James Russell.

Down by 3 in the 9th, Chicago wasn’t able to come back, losing 8-3.

Chicago pounded out 14 hits but were only 3-15 with runners in scoring position and left 9 on base.

Chicago will take on L.A. in the rubber match on Thursday in day game action. For Chicago, Ted Lilly (1-4) hopes to break out of his Wrigley Field funk (0-2 with a 5.68 ERA at home). The Dodgers will have their rookie righthander John Ely (3-1) pitching with the hopes of winning the series.
