Cubs Salvage Game 3 vs. Marlins

Who would’ve thought that the Milton Bradley for Carlos Silva trade would be so 1 sided? Not only did Chicago rid themselves of a clubhouse cancer, but the acquired a quality starting pitcher to anchor the back end of a solid rotation as well.

Silva (4-0) has been magnificent in his short Cub career and is 1 of the few bright spots for General Manager Jim Hendry. Silva went 6.1 innings allowing only 2 runs on 7 hits. The story this year for the Cubs, is that the starting pitching has been stellar but the offense hasn’t been able to bail them out.

Luckily for Silva and the Cubs, their 4 runs were just enough to preserve the win.

Ryan Theriot got the day off with a sore leg muscle and should be back in the lineup on Friday (Chicago has a scheduled off day on Thursday). Aramis Ramirez also got the day off due to his lack of offensive.

Derrek Lee, Starlin Castro, and Marlon Byrd all had multi-hit games. Mike Fontenot had 2 RBIs while Byrd added 1. Castro scored the 4th Cub run on a wild pitch.

Sean Marshall and Carlos Zambrano each pitched 0.2 innings of scoreless baseball and got the ball to the closer Carlos Marmol. Marmol made the entire crowd at Wrigley hold their breath. Marmol allowed 2 hits and 1 walk allowing 1 to score in the 9th. But with 2 men on, Marmol struck out Hanley Ramirez to end the game 4-3 to notch his 5th save of the season.

After avoiding being swept by the Marlins, Chicago will stay home and will look to return the favor against the Pirates  who swept them last week. Tom Gorzelanny (1-4) will pitch for the Cubs and hopefully will be the beneficiary of some run support. Brian Burres (2-1) will be on the bump for the Pirates.
