After an offseason filled with drama surrounding Seiya Suzuki’s transition to a near full-time designated hitter role, the Cubs outfielder has temporarily found himself back in regular defensive action recently thanks to Ian Happ’s absence.

Although a small sample size, Suzuki was given high praise from manager Craig Counsell following the most recent home stand against the White Sox.

During the first inning of Sunday’s finale, Suzuki threw out White Sox base runner Chase Meidroth at home plate. Meidroth was attempting to score on a fly ball hit to left field, but Suzuki delivered a perfect strike to home plate to keep the White Sox off the board.

This season, Seiya Suzuki has appeared in just 10 complete games as an outfielder with nearly all coming within the past week and primarily in left field. Previously a fixture in right field for the Cubs, Suzuki has been shifted to left with Kyle Tucker now occupying right and Ian Happ sidelined.

Manager Craig Counsell recently credited Suzuki’s play, as in a post game press conference he said, ” He’s (Seiya) played exceptionally well in left field this home stand. He’s done a heck of a job. Made several above average plays, took a run off the board today with a great throw. For having not played out there very much, he’s doing an excellent job.”

It’s good to see Suzuki on the right side of some positive defensive highlights in his return to the outfield. However, long term, the Cubs’ optimal outfield alignment won’t include him and a return to the designated hitter role is inevitable.
