Manny Ramirez is back in baseball. The Chicago Cubs announced Sunday that they have hired Ramirez as a player-coach for their Triple-A team, the Iowa Cubs.
The 41-year-old Ramirez will be reunited with Theo Epstein just years after their days in Boston. They were together for Bostons 2004 and 2007 World Series Championships. Epstein said that there will be no plans to bring Ramirez up to the big league club however.
Despite Manny’s success in the MLB, he has had his troubles as Epstein noted in a press conference:
Manny has made real mistakes in the past but he has owned up to them and moved his life in a positive direction the last couple of years. He is in a really great place right now and wants to share the lessons he’s learned along the way. We think he deserves another chance and that our young hitters will benefit from it.
The goal is simple here for the Cubs: Let Ramirez work with the young talent in the farm system and hope it translates hitting-wise. Ramirez can bring some knowledge to the job and hopefully work with Chicago’s prospects.
Ramirez will report to Mesa, Arizona for some competitive spring training before joining the Iowa Cubs.
Time will soon tell if Manny will still be Manny.
