Astros 4, Cubs 3

Chicago — The Cubs stranded seven runners over three innings leading up to the Astros three run 12th that sealed the Cubs’ fate. The Cubs had a runner at third with one out in the ninth, but Alfonso Soriano flied out to shallow center and Tyler Colvin struck out. They loaded the bases with one out in the 10th before a Kosuke Fukodome struck out and Geovany Soto flied to left and then in the 11th the Cubs put a runner on 2nd with one out and came up empty.

The Astros offense finally broke it open in the 12th with a pair of runs off Bob Howry and one more allowed by Jeff Stevens. It was Jason Michaels’ two run pinch-hit double off Stevens to the left-center gap that gave the Astros the lead.

The exciting brand of Cubs baseball continued though not going without a fight as Soto hit his 13th home run on the season to bring the game back to 4-3. The Cubs even put the winning run on first base in Jeff Baker with Ryan Theriot at second before Tyler Colvin hit a sharp liner to Hunter Pence in right to end it.

Ted Lilly pitched well again with no run support going 7 1/3 innings allowing just a pinch-hit home run to Pedro Feliz.

Been following Chicago sports for many years. I have ties to Rockford, Illinois however have since been displaced in North Carolina far from Illinois. I am still an avid fan despite the geographical complications in following my teams. I am known as the internet’s #1 Rex Grossman connoisseur
