Cubs Waste A Wells Pitched Game

Last week in Pittsburgh, Randy Wells had one of his most disappointing starts of his short Major League career. Questions about his maturity and commitment to the team began to arise. Luckily for the Cubs, Wells rebounded well on Tuesday night vs. the Marlins (16-17).

However much like the rest of the season, Chicago couldn’t get anything going on the offensive side of the ball. The lack of offense spoiled a quality start by Wells and dropped the Cubs to 6 games under .500 (14-20).

Wells threw 8 innings surrendering 3 runs on only 4 hits. Wells showed great command striking out 8 and walking only 1. The lone walk did end up biting Wells as that runner scored on a 2 run homer.

Esmailin Caridad pitched a scoreless 8th.

The Cubs’ offense only managed 1 run off of former farmhand Ricky Nolasco in his 7 innings. Derrek Lee tagged Nolasco for an RBI double in the 6th while Marlon Byrd hit a sac fly off of Chris Leroux for the only 2 Cub runs.

The Cubs continue to play sloppy defense. Aramis Ramirez committed his 6th while rookie Starlin Castro committed his 5th. The young shortstop is young and is adjusting to the big leagues but must improve.

Lou Piniella made some lineup changes to try and spark the team but to no avail. Kosuke Fukudome led off while Theriot moved to 2nd in the order. Byrd hit 3rd while Lee slid to cleanup. Aramis Ramirez continues to struggle at the plate (as well as on defense) but told the media that he is his own hitting coach. Ramirez is batting .159 on the season.

The Cubs will look to split the 2 game set with the Marlins on Wednesday. Carlos Silva (3-0) will look to stop the bleeding for the Cubs. Chris Volstad (3-2) will try to break out the brooms for the Marlins.
