John Danks may begin the 2013 season on the disabled list as his velocity is in the low 80’s and he has not impressed in his three Spring Training appearances. According to HardBall Talk’s DJ Short Don Cooper said: “John is aware if he’s ready he’s going to be with us, if he’s not, we’ll give him more time. It’s not something we are going to rush or force feed. We can’t say, ‘Hey, we need you to throw harder.’ We have no control over that. All we have control over is going out there and having our sidelines and going out in the game. Heck, he threw 60 pitches yesterday so that’s a plus in itself. He’s climbing.”

Danks posted an 11.74 ERA and 4/3 K/BB ratio over 7 2/3 innings this spring.

With Danks struggling and his 5 year $65 million contract looking like a disaster only a year in, who will the White Sox turn to in order to fill the rotation spot that Danks will leave vacant for at least the first couple of weeks? Southpaw Hector Santiago and Dylan Axelrod could duke it out for the final rotation spot, or the Sox may surprise and throw Brazilian World Baseball Classic great Andre Rienzo into the fire. Either way the Sox rotation is going to be weaker than expected if Danks does start the season on the disabled list, however, if he can come back and be the John Danks of old by missing a couple starts I am sure Sox fans will understand.
