Epstein hints Cubs could add one more bullpen piece

Pitchers and catchers officially reported to Spring Training on Tuesday in Arizona, signaling that baseball season is getting closer and closer.

With the Cubs invading Mesa for the next month and a half, there are going to be some important questions answered in the coming day. Theo Epstein and Joe Maddon met the media for the first time ahead of the 2019 campaign on Tuesday to discuss some of those important questions.

Epstein touched on various topics including his roster which could see an addition soon. But don’t get too excited Cubs fans, because Epstein wasn’t discussing Bryce Harper or Manny Machado, instead it was referencing the bullpen.

“We’re still in touch with a lot of the free agents out there and their representatives,” Epstein said Tuesday via 670 The Score. “I’d say there’s a possibility. We’ve been active lately in the reliever market. There have been some quality relievers out there in pretty affordable deals. There’s always a chance that we’re able to squeeze one more in to give Joe (Maddon) a number of quality options of depth.”

The Cubs bullpen did struggle at times in 2018 and was considered a need going into this offseason.

They did add Brad Brach and Tony Barnette on one-year deals but adding another arm would certainly help. The big name left out there is Craig Kimbrel who spent the past three seasons with the Boston Red Sox. He was once considered one of the top closers in the game and would help fill a void for closer Brandon Morrow, who is expected to miss the start of the season.
