Fire Acquire Mike Magee from Los Angeles Galaxy for Robbie Rogers

The Chicago Fire have acquired Los Angeles Galaxy striker Mike Magee in exchange for midfielder Robbie Rogers, according to USA Today.  Magee is a Chicago native, and had a hat trick against the Fire in their first game of the season as part of a 4-0 Galaxy triumph.  Rogers, who was acquired in the Dominic Oduro trade, came out as homosexual and retired following the acquisition by the Fire.  Since then, he has started training with the Galaxy, seeking to come out of his short retirement and play in Major League Soccer and for the US National Team in the upcoming 2014 World Cup.

The trade comes at basically no cost to the Fire, as Rogers was never willing to report to the team, and lands then a legitimate scoring threat as Magee, the Chicago native, has scored six times this season.  To put that in perspective, the Chicago Fire as a whole have six goals this season.

This move comes just days after the Fire traded for Bakary Soumare, the defender who played three seasons in Chicago before moving on to the second divisions of France and Germany and later returning to MLS with the Philadelphia Union.  The Fire are also rumored to be heavily pursuing midfielder Sebastian Mila.  This move is a major win on paper for the Fire front office, as the team looks to get back into contention after starting 2-7-1.  The Fire are no strangers to late seasons surges, as the team started 2-7-15 in 2011 before surging with a 7-2-1 run to come up just three points out of post-season, a season in which Dominic Oduro, Sebastian Grazzini, Pavel Pardo, and Dan Gargan were all acquired during the season.

The mixing and matching of Chris Rolfe, Patrick Nyarko, Sherjill MacDonald, and Maicon Santos has not worked out well for the Fire at the striker position, so – with the defense shored up by Soumare – the move for Magee helps fill what is arguably the club’s biggest position of need.
