With a total of two shots on target in the 90 minutes, Wednesday’s match between the Chicago Fire and the Colorado Rapids was hardly an offensive duel. In the third minute of extra time in the second half, Rapids midfielder Dillon Serna chipped a shot that hit the crossbar – inches away from finding the net – but was called offside.
The Fire entered the match without starting striker and 2013 MVP Mike Magee and midfielder Patrick Nyarko. Harrison Shipp, Lovel Palmer and Quincy Amarikwa both started the match from the bench.
The Fire did manage to accumulate six shots – all off target – lead by forward Juan Luis Anangono’s three. Palmer, defender Steven Kinney and forward Benji Joya combined for the other three.
The team struggled to create any form of an attack, which can partially be attributed to the team’s passing percentage of just 56% compared to Colorado’s 77% mark.
After the midweek game, the eighth-place Fire’s next match will be at home on Saturday, June 7 against Seattle Sounders FC. With a 7:30 CDT start time, the match will be the team’s last before the World Cup, during which the team will host a U.S. Open Cup game against the Pittsburgh Riverhounds on June 18. The United States Men’s National Team kicks off World Cup action June 16 against Ghana.
