The Chicago Fire Soccer Club announced on Friday that it had named Clint Mathis an assistant coach. Mathis is not the first high profile addition to the coaching staff under new head coach Frank Yallop this offseason, as the team named former Fire defender C. J. Brown an assistant coach in December.
Mathis was one of the best goal-scorers in Major League Soccer in the first half of the 2000’s. The midfielder and forward had three stints in his career with the LA Galaxy, two stints with the MetroStars which were renamed the New York Red Bulls by the time he returned for his second tenure with the team, two stints with Real Salt Lake and a season with the Colorado Rapids. Mathis also played overseas in Germany and in Greece. After debuting with the Galaxy in 1998, Mathis ended his career with the same team in 2010. Mathis also played forty-six matches with the United States Men’s National Team, scoring twelve goals along the way. Mathis scored five goals in one game as a member of the MetroStars in 2000 in a game against the Dallas Burn, now FC Dallas.

Mathis won the MLS Cup in 2009 as a member of Real Salt Lake, and was key in the United States advancing in the 2002 World Cup.
