The Fire hosted a free to public U.S. Open Cup match on Thursday and advanced to the tournament quarterfinals with the 2-1 win over the Columbus Crew.

Notes:

  • Mike Magee had already become the first player to score in all of his first three Chicago Fire competitive matches with his strike to bring the match within one on Saturday against the Portland Timbers.  Magee would strike in the twenty-ninth minute on Thursday to level the match at a goal a piece and extend the record run to four games.
  • Patrick Nyarko would add a goal in the seventy-seventh minute of play to put the Crew away.
  • All thee goal scorers in the match – Warzycha, Magee, and Nyarko – received yellow card cautions during the match.  A collision between Bakary Soumare and Columbus’s Bernando Anor in stoppage time resulted in another pair of cards.
  • Dilly Duka started the match, but Maicon Santos came into the match in his place at half time.  Daniel Paladini would enter for Logan Pause in the fifty-ninth minute of play with the match still level.  Jeff Larentowicz was the club’s final substitution, replacing Alex in the eighty-first minute.
  • Dominic Oduro did not start the match for Columbus, but came in in the ninth minute for the injured Glauber.  Federico Higuain entered for Ben Speas in the seventieth minute, an offensively minded attempt to break the tie and put Columbus in front, though Nyarko had other ideas.  Aaron Shoenfeld was Columbus’s final substitution in the eighty-second minute to replace Tony Tchani.
  • The next Open Cup match will be against Orlando City, a club that happened to beat their own MLS affiliate on Wednesday (Sporting Kansas City), at home at 7:30 PM on Wednesday, June 26, a date that is also scheduled for Game 7 of the Stanley Cup should it get to that point.
  • The Fire are off until hosting the Colorado Rapids on Wednesday, June 19, in a regular season match at Toyota Park.
