In what is usually a tuneup for the regular season, the entire Chicago Bears team stalled Saturday night vs. the Cincinnati Bengals.
There wasn’t much good to take away from this game as the Bears couldn’t get anything going managing just three points on offense. It was a very frustrating night and if it’s a sign of things to come, the Bears are going to be in trouble come September 13th. Here is some quick reaction:
Cornerback rotation
The cornerback position in Chicago is pretty interesting right now as veteran Alan Ball took over as the number two tonight, using Sherrick McManis as the nickel. The odd man out seemed to be Tim Jennings who didn’t enter the game until the fourth quarter.
After the game, head coach John Fox had an interesting answer when asked about Jennings, who seems to be no guarantee to make this team.
Will Sutton
The second-year defensive lineman turned in another good performance recording three tackles in the first half. Sutton has played well in all three preseason games and has been one of the Bears best interior lineman. Sutton is almost a lock to make the roster now.
Offensive line
Aside from Will Montgomery and Kyle Long, the Bears have a problem on their offensive line. Tackles Jermon Bushrod and Charles Leno both played a terrible game, a common theme for most of the o-line this preseason. The unit yielded 2 sacks to the Bengals pass rush.
There were also penalties which killed drives — again. The common solution to fix the right tackle problem would be to move Long to the position. But there’s no sign of that just yet.
Secondary
The struggle in the Bears secondary continues as they look to find their final rotation at safety. Rookie Adrian Amos got another start but didn’t impress as much as he has at practice. The tackling from the entire unit was bad, including starter Antrel Rolle.
It’s a concern all around for the Bears at the position, which has doomed them for years now, and will need to sharpen up quickly. A quarterback named Aaron Rodgers comes to town in a few weeks and it could get ugly.
Jay Cutler
The quarterback was playing without his four top wide receivers and still managed to have a nice game. Cutler finished 13 of 17 for 98 yards throwing to guys like Josh Bellamy and Rashad Lawrence. He still hasn’t committed a turnover this preseason but has been let down by bad offensive lineman play.
