Game 2 in the AHL Western Conference Semifinals between the Rockford IceHogs and the Grand Rapids Griffins is in the books. It wasn’t pretty, in reality, it turned just plain ugly in the 3rd period.
The Hogs struck first at 6:18 into the game, with Brandon Mashinter scoring a goal in the 1st period. Griffins’, Tyler Bertuzzi, answered back 6 minutes later, tying the game up 1-1. The Griffins scored once in the 2nd frame and went on to score 3 more goals in the 3rd, while Rockford failed to score during the remainder of the game. Rockford’s netminder, Michael Leighton, was observed breaking his stick after the Griffins tallied their 5th goal. Things just fell apart from there for the IceHogs, as they appeared to just give up.
After time ran out at the end of the 3rd period, tempers flared for the teams, resulting in multiple Misconduct Penalties being handed out to both teams.
Games 3 & 4 are scheduled in Rockford on May 13th & 14th at 7pm each night. Fight cards optional.
