In their quest to solidify a core group after the franchise’s second Cup in four years, the Blackhawks extended defenseman Niklas Hjalmarsson’s contract through the 2018 – 2019 NHL season.
Hjalmarsson’s contract, reportedly worth $4.1 million per season, comes just two days after the Blackhawks signed goalie Corey Crawford to a six-year, $36 million deal.
Hjalmarsson has been a part of both Stanley Cup Championship Blackhawks rosters in the past four years and has solidified himself as a key member of the group. The 26-year old defenseman registered a career-high plus-10 rating in 23 postseason contests en route to the 2013 Stanley Cup and has played in over 300 regular season contests for Chicago over the last six years.
