The Huskies still havent announced a starting quarterback

The 2014 NIU Huskies begin their season against FCS squad Presbyterian Thursday night.

DE KALB – With the Northern Illinois Huskies kicking off the 2014 NCAA football season in less than 20 hours, the team is ready to go and they hope to capitalize on the success of the last two seasons.

The only issue that lingers is who the starting quarterback will be. After going through training camp over the last four weeks, which included re-stocking talent at certain positions, head coach Rod Carey still hasn’t decided who will get the nod under center.

Junior Matt McIntosh (the most experienced signal caller on the current roster), along with sophomores Anthony Maddie and Drew Hare, have all been battling for the coveted job since spring workouts earlier this year. Taking over for Jordan Lynch will be a tough task to live up to, but it’s a task that all three men feel they can handle.

They’ve all performed so well in practice that it’s made coach Carey’s decision that much harder. So with everything that has transpired this summer, there are only two options at play with the starting job……. Either the starter will be named as a game-time decision, or we could see all three men get reps against Presbyterian Thursday night.

Of course, a three quarterback system probably won’t serve NIU well as the season progresses. So perhaps the way each player performs during the opener could decide who starts for the rest of the season. We won’t know until after the game at earliest, we may not get a decision until next week. But in the mean time, it will be fun to watch these young guys compete for what’s now one of the most coveted positions in college football.
