It All Comes Down To Game 144 in Iowa

I’ve taken a sudden interest in the actual wins and losses of the Iowa Cubs, because if a team’s name says Cubs, and they are fighting to make the playoffs, why not follow along. Last we checked, the I-Cubs needed to win two of their final three games to make the playoffs, they split the first two games, and it all comes down to today.

Their opponent is the Cardinals’ AAA team, the Memphis Redbirds, means this afternoon’s game is our only chance to have 2010 bragging rights over the Cardinals. The I-Cubs send Jay Jackson to the mound against Evan MacLane, a 28 year old who has been pitching in the PCL since 2006.

The I-Cubs mounted an impressive comeback each of the last two days, but yesterday it wasn’t quite enough. Hopefully they can get out front today, and not have to battle back. Jackson is certainly a talented enough pitcher to start a big game, hopefully years in the Cubs’ organization haven’t made him prone to bad starts in big moments.

Other Minor League Notes:

The Tennessee Smokies finish up the regular season today against Carolina. The Smokies will be headed to the playoffs though, so their season is not over yet.

The Peoria Chiefs also finish up today, and start Robinson Lopez, who came over the in the Derrek Lee trade. The Chiefs will not be headed to the playoffs, as they failed to win either the first or second half division title.

The Daytona Cubs’ season ended yesterday, they finished in second place in the second half. They had an overall record of 75-64.

For now, Go I-Cubs, beat the Cardinals.
