The Chicago Sky must improve its roster in 2025 after posting the Eastern Conference’s worst record at 13-27. The Sky finished 2024 with the third-worst record in the league, only beating out the Dallas Wings (9-31) and Los Angeles Sparks (8-32).
Power forward Angel Reese was a bright spot for the Sky in 2024. The rookie made the WNBA All-Rookie Team and an All-Star appearance. The 22-year-old from LSU was the league’s rebounding leader.
The Chicago Sky were urged to sign Caitlin Clark’s teammate
Julia Poe of the Chicago Tribune recently suggested the Sky should look at signing a teammate of Reese’s rivals in free agency. Poe suggested 29-year-old point guard Kelsey Mitchell would be a solid addition for Chicago.
“The biggest challenge of Mitchell’s free agency will be prying her from the Indiana Fever,” Poe wrote. “While Mitchell said she’s weighing her options heading into 2025, the guard is sitting in a golden situation with a high-caliber coach and a surefire star — Caitlin Clark — in Indiana.
“The pros for the Sky are obvious: Mitchell shot 40.2% from 3-point range and averaged a career-high 19.2 points last season, showcasing her ability to space the floor with a strong guard unit and feed an elite post around the rim. But they’ll need to do some pretty tough negotiating to convince Mitchell that she would be in a better spot with the young future in Chicago rather than Indiana.”
Kelsey Mitchell would improve the Sky’s offense
Mitchell was the No. 2 pick in the 2018 draft by the Fever. The Ohio State standout made the WNBA All-Rookie Team and has earned two All-Star appearances. With defenses having to key in on Clark, the native of Cincinnati saw her field goal percentage hit a record-high of .468 in 2024, better than her career average of .426.
Mitchell would be a helpful addition to a Sky team that needs to find the basket more in 2025. The Sky signing Mitchell would only add to the budding rivalry between Chicago and Indiana.
