The White Sox young talent was on display Saturday as they played the Cubs to a 4-4 tie. The game was highlighted by two big name prospects acquired last season in trades by general manager Rick Hahn. Starting pitcher Lucas Giolito and outfielder Eloy Jimenez both impressed against the Cubs with a game that was televised on WGN.
Giolito started the game and struck out eight over four-plus innings include striking out All-Star and former National League MVP Kris Bryant twice. He also struck out lefty slugger Kyle Schwarber twice and only allowed just two hits which included a home run to catcher Victor Caratini in the third inning. Giolito was acquired last season from the Washington Nationals in the Adam Eaton trade in which he was the key prospect the team received in return.
Last season in seven starts, he posted four quality starts pitching more than six innings and allowing less than three runs.
Jimenez made his spring training debut on Saturday after being sidelined from the start of Cactus League play with tendinitis in his left and impressed with a two-run homer in his first at-bat. On a 0-2 count with a pitch low and away, Jimenez drove the pitch to the opposite field for the home run. The home run was special for him as he did against his former team and is seen the White Sox number one prospect and is ranked third on MLB’s Top 100 list.
The news was all good for the White Sox on Saturday as the team lost another of their top prospects to injury as centerfielder Luis Robert is expected to sidelined for 10 weeks with an injury to his left thumb. The news is especially devastating as Robert impress earlier in the week with grand slam against the Cincinnati Reds. The team will return to exhibition play on Sunday when they take on the Arizona Diamondbacks
