Major League Soccer announced on Thursday that Chicago Fire striker “Magic” Mike Magee has been named the league’s Most Valuable Player for the 2013 season. Magee, acquired from the LA Galaxy earlier in the season in the Robbie Rogers trade, edged out his former teammate Robbie Keane for the honor, followed by Montréal’s Marco Di Vaio and New York’s Tim Cahill.
The award, voted on by the clubs, media members and players, has never before gone to a member of the Fire. Magee held sizable leads in the voting in each category, with player votes being the only category from which he received less than one third of the votes.
Magee led the Golden Boot race as of the end of the Fire’s last game, a 5-2 disappointment at the hands of the New York Red Bulls, after scoring the first goal of the game, but lost the award later that night when Vancouver’s Camilo scored a hat trick to take the league’s goal-scoring title.
Magee finished voting with a cumulative weighted score of 98.81, well ahead of second place Keane’s 58.56.
