Matt Forte: “It was disheartening” to leave the Chicago Bears

Matt Forte was one of the most productive players in recent memory for the Chicago Bears.

In his eight years as the lead running back, Forte ran for 8,602 yards, had 12,718 yards from scrimmage and scored 64 total touchdowns. Forte was phased out of the offense last year to some degree, thanks to the contributions of Jeremy Langford and the Bears probably realizing that they weren’t going to compete for the playoffs and thus giving the young guys more run.

Still, Forte will be missed. And by the sound of it, he’ll miss Chicago as well.

In an interview with NFL Network Forte chimed in on him leaving the Bears. “At first it was disheartening,” Forte said. “I’m looking at it from my prospective, from my end as a player, as like I’ve done everything, I’m doing everything right, produced every year and been healthy for the most part as a running back.”

Forte went on to say, “For me to not, you know, be re-signed, there was a bit of bitterness there.”

You can see the the arguments on both sides.

For the Bears, it doesn’t make sense to sign a 30 year old running back when you can and have drafted one for much cheaper at a similar production rate, especially when your team isn’t competing. From Forte’s side, you’d like to see your hard work and production, as well as everything you’ve done in the past for the team be rewarded.

Matt Forte did say that he is looking forward to reuniting with former Bears WR Brandon Marshall amongst other things.
