Miami Dolphins Sign Jay Cutler out of Retirement

The Miami Dolphins made headlines Sunday with the signing of former Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler following quarterback Ryan Tannehill’s knee injury.

Cutler, who retired from football in March following his release from the Bears, was expected to start his broadcasting career with the NFL on Fox before being signed by the Dolphins.

Miami and former Bears QB Jay Cutler are finalizing a one-year deal, sources tell ESPN. Two sides are expected to hammer it out shortly.

Cutler is reunited with head coach Adam Gase who was the Bears offensive coordinator in 2015 when Cutler posted his best statistical season in his eight years as the Bears starting quarterback.

That season, Cutler threw for 21 touchdowns and posted a quarterback rating of 92.3 which was a career high, but the most important stat was that Cutler only threw 11 interceptions that season.

Cutler attributed his success that season to Gase who put Cutler in best situation to succeed even with having inconsistency at the wide receiver and tight end position that year.

The signing is reported to be a one year deal worth $10 million with incentives included.

The Dolphins made the move after quarterback Tannehill injured his left knee in practice Thursday scrambling out of bounds. Tannehill tore his ACL in the same knee last season and chose not to have surgery to repair the torn ligament.

With this injury, Tannehill and Dolphins are still debating if surgery is the best option as if Tannehill does chose to have surgery he will be out for the entire season.

If Tannehill is ruled out for the season, the Cutler signing provides the Dolphins to remain competitive as they made the playoffs last season as a 6th seed with a 10-6 record last season and were predicted to make the playoff again this season before the injury.

It is important to note that Cutler is coming of a severe injury as he missed the last six games of last season after suffering a torn labrum in his throwing arm that required season ending surgery. The signing provides insurance for the Dolphins with the uncertainty of Tannehill’s injury still yet determined.
