It was only a few years ago that the Chicago White Sox signed prized Cuban prospect Jose Abreu and now they might be on the verge of landing another big international prospect.
The sweepstakes for Cuban outfielder Luis Robert is officially underway and the White Sox might just be the favorites to sign the 19-year-old.
MLB reporter Jon Heyman appeared on the “Mully and Hanley” show Monday morning and stated he expects the White Sox to sign Robert:
“Obviously the White Sox are one of the teams involved,” Heyman said. “I’ve heard St. Louis, Houston, about eight other teams. It sounds like Atlanta has bowed out at this point. But he’s an extremely talented outfielder and just a kind of guy the White Sox could use.”
He continued:
“The White Sox are a big-market team, need help particularly in the outfield perhaps — although the Garcias are playing well,” Heyman said. “I think he fits. They seem to like him. They’ve talked about him a little bit. At this point, it’d be a surprise if he went somewhere else.”
Robert can sign with a team as early as this weekend and landing him would be a big boost to the White Sox future.
The organization is currently in rebuilding mode and already has a prospect in Yoan Moncada that is thriving in Triple-A. If signed, Robert is still a few years away from being in Chicago but would be right on track for when the White Sox can make their move.
Heyman mentioned other teams in the race, so the money will be something to keep an eye on as the sweepstakes begins to heat up.
