Pitching is a big priority for the Chicago Cubs in the offseason as they look to fill some voids in the starting rotation.
Jake Arrieta and John Lackey are both free agents this year and the Cubs are looking to add a pitcher to their staff that consists of Kyle Hendricks, Jon Lester and Jose Quintana. With the Hot Stove quickly approaching, there’s already been a link to one of the better free agent pitchers out there.
The Chicago Sun-Times’ Gordon Wittenmyer wrote about Cobb potentially being a good fix for the Cubs rotation. In the piece, he mentions that the Cubs have interest in Cobb going as far as saying that they have had preliminary talks with his agent.

The Cubs already have his first big-league manager in place and just hired the only big-league pitching coach he has known. Plus, sources say the Cubs have had multiple preliminary conversations with Cobb’s agent, none of them involving any kind of contract parameters.
Cubs manager Joe Maddon managed Cobb in Tampa Bay and new pitching coach Jim Hickey has been his pitching coach for his entire MLB career.
Cobb had Tommy John Surgery back in 2015 and started 5 games for the Rays in 2016. He rebounded in 2017 by making 29 starts and finishing the year with a 3.66 ERA. Cobb struck out 128 batters and had a WHIP of 1.221.
He’s certainly going to be the Cubs top pitching target this offseason and we wouldn’t be shocked if a deal is done quickly.
