In his first show of strength, Robin Ventura took a stand which was clearly off course from the previous regime when he announced the Dayan Viciedo may be starting the season as the team’s left fielder. Had the Sox intended for him to play left in the Major Leagues, they could have started him there in AAA, instead of right.
Viciedo, signed as a 3rd baseman out of Cuba, was, because of his defensive deficiencies, moved to right field due to his arm strength and this off season the Sox moved Carlos Quentin in order to move Viciedo to the big league club. At this point moving Viciedo to leftfield would be the most prudent move. Viciedo has never played leftfield. Ventura said of the move, “He’s acclimated himself to whatever he’s been asked to do”.
This move would open right field for Alex Rios, a position which he has manned in 720 games vs. only 426 in center. Rios has stated his desire to either play center or right field. Rios said of the possible moves
Alejandro De Aza would be the centerfielder, which is his natural position.
Also looking to work their way into the outfield is Brent Lillibridge and Kosuke Fukudome
In the end Ventura said, “Guys will just have to be open to moving around and do what’s best for the team”.
