Patrick Kane becomes first American born player to lead NHL in points

History has been made.

Chicago Blackhawks star Patrick Kane became the first American to lead the NHL in points this season, earning the Art Ross trophy.

Kane is coming off an incredible 2015-16 regular season in which he tallied 106 points including 46 goals and 60 assists. It’s the best season of his young career with the Blackhawks, which in he’s won three Stanley Cups. He’s also the first Blackhawks player to win the award since Stan Mikita and Bobby Hull won it five-straight years from 1963-68.

“It is an honor being the first American to win the scoring title as there have been so many great hockey players from the United States in the NHL,” said Kane via press release. “I take a lot of pride in that, but I also take a lot of pride in doing it with the Chicago Blackhawks. I owe a lot to my teammates, coaches and the organization as I couldn’t have done this without them. This has been a special season, but we still have a lot to accomplish as a team and I look forward to another long run in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.”

The 27-year-old had a franchise-best 26 game point streak that lasted from Oct. 17 to Dec. 13 and was the longest by an American-born player.

Kane will now hope to lead the Blackhawks to their fourth Stanley Cup in the past seven seasons as they open up the first round against the St. Louis Blues. Check back for more information on the series schedule as it becomes available.
