The Chicago Cubs are getting some much-needed help in their struggling bullpen. After a report by The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal on Wednesday morning stated that the Cubs were pushing hard for closer Craig Kimbrel, it appears as if he will join the Northsiders after-all.
Hours after that report, Rosenthal tweeted that the Cubs and Kimbrel have agreed to a deal pending a physical.
Kimbrel has yet to pitch in 2019 but had a 2.74 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 96 strikeouts against 31 walks in 62 1/3 innings for the Red Sox during the 2018 regular season. He did struggle in the postseason and decided not to re-sign with the team in the offseason.
For the Cubs, they were able to free up some money with Ben Zobrist on the restricted list. The infielder has been on the list since early May as he’s going through a divorce.
With Pedro Strop back from the IL, the Cubs will use him as a set-up guy going to Kimbrel for the save.
